Now open: Yonge & Eglinton’s hottest barre. Hello, Barreworks!

In a move that will surely make it difficult to move, I spent yesterday afternoon at Yonge & Eglinton’s hottest new barre: Barreworks! A favourite of the Queen West crew, Barreworks is a ballet-inspired, barre-based workout that all but guarantees you’ll feel the burn the next day…or week. I tried a class out at the Queen W. location for a blogger event earlier this year, but as a Yonge/Bloor worker and uptown dweller, I couldn’t justify a repeat visit.  Just when I thought I couldn’t get more excited for the midtown studio’s opening, Rema from The Burgundy Book booked us in for a private class on opening weekend. Located at Briar Hill + Yonge (beside lululemon + the party store), Barreworks is centrally located and easy to find.

The studio is bright and airy, the staff lovely. Our group had the energetic and hilarious Johnny as our instructor. It was his first official class at Barreworks and he definitely made his mark. Johnny led us through an hour-long workout that hit every single muscle group and kept our heart rates up the entire duration. Using the barre for balance, weighted balls to sculpt our arms (and make the lower-body moves tougher) and resistance bands, we squatted, lunged, plied, curled, crunched and planked our way through the hour. I was dripping sweat and had turned an unattractive shade of beet red by the time 30 minutes rolled around.

To say I felt the burn would be an understatement. We were all in agreement that it was one of the toughest classes we’d ever take (bootcamp included). However, Johnny kept us interested and on our toes (literally) throughout the entire session. In a group class, I find you don’t always get the personal attention you need to do the moves correctly and effectively. That wasn’t the case here – along with learning our names almost immediately, Johnny came around the class and gently corrected our postures and alignment throughout the session.

I know, I’m so mature. It could have been worse, trust me.

Our class was filled with lovely beauty bloggers and other social media ladies. Apparently we’re a bit of a sassy bunch. OK, mostly the ladies from Benefit Cosmetics.

While I love my job, #agencylife has been looking a lot like this lately:

As you can imagine, an intensified workout plan is on the books this month. Since I loved my class with Johnny so much, I’ve signed up for the introductory $40 unlimited class package, good for 2 weeks of as many classes as you can handle at Barreworks. I’ll be there with Rema on  Tuesday for DripBarre at 6:15pm & Thursday for bAAAre at 5:30 and am also taking Johnny’s Mixed Level Barre class again on Saturday at 2:30 with some #humberPR lady friends and one of my favourite Toronto blogger friends, Shannon Kelly. If you want to give a class a try, come with! Your first class is only $10 (usually $21).  You can sign up here. Follow my barre journey on Twitter using the hashtag #barrebum.

See you at the barre!

Disclosure: I was not compensated to write this post. All classes on opening weekend of Barreworks midtown were free!
