In the spirit of years past (see: 2012 & 2013 posts) this will be a recap of the year past and a little look into what’s coming in 2014. I spent New Year’s Eve the same way we spend every New Year’s Eve – dinner downtown and then a party with friends. The big change? I wasn’t with my boyfriend this year – I was with my fiancé!
Let’s lead with the big news: in 2013, I got engaged to the love of my life after just over 3 years of dating.
The night we met:
Mike & I met on a mutual friend’ campaign to become councillor of Ward 2 in Vaughan. The night we met was coincidentally the one where a photographer from the Globe & Mail was joining us to snap some pics of our team in action during canvassing. Dan (the candidate) has been keeping the high-res JPG of this photo from me, presumably so he can gift it to us on our wedding day. Smart guy, non?
The night we got engaged:
I won’t bore you to death (or disgust you any more) with the details of our engagement or engagement parties, but I do have to say a few things. First, that I’m the luckiest girl to have found a guy who not only complements me perfectly but also encourages me to do what I love and secondly that I’m the one he chose to be with forever. I can’t wait to share our wedding planning with you as we move towards our big day: June 6, 2015!
2013 was a big year for my career. I’ve been at Proximity for a year and a half now and yes, I still love it. I now have a partner in crime – Megan Siegel – who has not only taken over some of the clients I’d been working on but also acts as a sounding board, other half and friend. We work on a pretty awesome team.
I’ve worked on some great things this year, including smallenfreuden, Infinite Music and TIFF for Visa, the Harvey’s Copyright campaign and Lay’s Do Us A Flavour and been in the room for (and won!) my first pitch. I also ran two influencer programs end-to-end – one based in the US for Bolthouse Farms and the other for Harvey’s. You could say I’ve been busy!
Blog & Social
It’s been another banners year in the blog department – readership doubled from 2012 numbers! I feel like I’m starting to hit my stride in terms of what kinds of things I’ve been posting and leveraging the skills I use on the job for my own online space and content. The big thing? I’m still loving it. There are definitely days that I don’t feel like blogging and days I avoid social apart from my client commitments, but overall the love is there and I’m very grateful that I get to share my words with you – and that people care enough to read.
I experienced some pretty cool things this year, including learning to decorate cakes with Cake Boss’ Gabriela Parisi, finding my perfect engagement ring during Breakfast at Tiffany & Co., learning to make pasta with Chef Lynn Crawford and hanging out with some of the biggest celebs in the Moroccanoil Interview Suite during TIFF.

I know it’s been 4 years since I graduated from Queen’s, but I still can’t get enough. I’m not washed up, just passionate . I’ve been so fortunate to head back to both my alma maters this year to speak. One of the highlights of my year was heading back to Queen’s so speak at the Queen’s Media & Journalism Conference with fellow Queen’s & Humber PR alum Stella Lee. I’m so excited to be heading back to Queen’s this March to speak at the conference again – who’s up for a road trip & some QP? I also spoke three times at Humber PR and was honoured to participate as a speaker at CM1.
I really adore public speaking and hope to do even more of it this year. Want to book me at your school or conference? Shoot me an email!
I’ve really had the best year with my friends as well. They’ve all been incredibly supportive and so fun to be around. I feel like I’ve finally hit my stride – this year has been pretty drama-free. Last year I made a concerted effort to cut out toxic people – you know, the kind who leave piles of business cards on the table at your birthday party – and it’s really made me a happier person. Cheers to awesome ladies!
I’d be remiss if I didn’t share the latest addition to our little family, too. In November, Mike and I fell in love with a kitten at PetSmart and we ended up spending the next week thinking about him. The following Friday, we made the decision to go and get him, only to find out that the cat rescue that provides PetSmart with the in-store adoptions had picked him up so he could participate in an adoption drive the next morning. We spent the afternoon tracking him down and ended up driving down to College St. that night to pick him up. Say hello to our kitten, Gatsby!
That’s a wrap on 2013! I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings in terms of work, this blog and my personal life. I’ve already shared my resolutions, so tell me yours in the comments!
@stephaniefusco sounds like 2013 ruled!!
