Winter Desk Essentials

If you asked me a few years ago what my desk essentials were, I would have said 3 Venti Bolds, a notepad for list-making and some black pens. Well, the hustle is real and I now know that long hours at your desk are made better by a few creature comforts.

I’d even go so far as to say that your desk should be an oasis, full of things that brighten your day and keep you prepared for just about anything. That’s especially true once daylight savings time kicks in and the only sliver of sunshine you get is through your office window.

Keep reading for the 5 items that get me through my everyday desk life and are essential for surviving the winter months.

Winter-ravaged cuticles have a way of ruining your day, but your usual cuticle oil will probably ruin your paperwork and make your keyboard unbearably slippery. A thick, emollient drip-free cuticle treatment like Dior Creme Abricot Fortifying Cream for Nails will nourish without the oil slip. If you’re on a budget, give Sally Hansen Cuticle Rehab a try!

A luxurious hand salve like Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm will make your desk feel like a spa with its therapeutic aromatherapy properties as it softens your skin. While any old hand cream will do, an extra-luxe lotion beloved by Martha Stewart has a way of making your day extra-special. I’m addicted. For a less pricey pick, try Lovefresh Pear Hand + Body Lotion (on my desk at work!) or LUSH Helping Hands (in my bedside table).

For all that ails you, Saje Pocket Farmacy has the cure. Zippered up in a compact case, you’ll find 5 natural roll-on remedies to get you through the week. I’ve been addicted to the brand ever since co-founder Jean-Pierre LeBlanc slathered Peppermint Halo on my aching neck and shoulders last year at TIFF. For the ultimate tension buster, he suggests following Peppermint Halo with Pain Release. You’ll also find remedies for an aching stomach (eater’s digest), high-stress situations (stress release) and protecting yourself against that bug going around the office (immune). Let your coworkers know the doctor is in.

Condition your lips throughout the day with the best balm for Canadian winters, Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. The thick salve locks in moisture, plumps up your lips and protects them from the great outdoors. When it comes time to transition to a big meeting or after-work drinks, have an easy berry hue in the wings. Make Up For Ever’s Artist Rouge Lipstick in M102 is beautifully buildable – smudge it on for a just-kissed stained look or apply in a traditional way for a bold and professional lip look.

If you’re really feeling fancy, add a few potted plants that are hard to kill to your space. I’ve been on a serious succulent kick for the past two years but they’re nearly impossible to find here in the city for some reason…so I binge-buy when I see them. You’d be amazed what a little greenery and some gravel in a pretty pot can do!

An Aesop store just opened up in walking distance from me. I too own that scent of hand-cream and try not to use it much… $$$. Love the post idea!

  • spiffykerms Holt Renfrew carries it here, but the store you shared snaps of was just SO BEAUTIFUL. I read a bunch of reviews before I purchased that said it lasts forever. I know that’s the case with my similarly-expensive L’Occitane 20% shea cream, so fingers crossed!

    And thank you xo

With you on the hand creams – my hands suffer so much in autumn and winter! I also always have a lip balm and tissues on my desk and in my handbag. Another essential for me in the colder months is fingerless gloves, they help to keep my hands warm but don’t prevent me from being able to grip things, great for my drive to and from work!

  • amyrutter I can’t get enough lotion! Especially when it’s super-luxe. I always stash away tissues, along with cold meds and eye drops and usually a face mist as well. Always prepared…

I always have a hand cream, hand sanitizer, lip balm, and a compact mirror on my desk at work.  I use them more than I would have thought.
