3 must-have beauty products you didn’t know you needed

Everyone knows that having a good lipstick, mascara and concealer in your arsenal is a necessity. What often flies under the radar are those products you didn’t even know you needed that will ultimately change your life. These three products will quickly become your favourites and a part of your everyday routine.

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo, ~$11-$19, Sephora
Dry shampoo has been all the rage for the past few years, but many formulas can leave your hair stinky and gritty and often fail to provide the volume you crave. This Oscar Blandi dry shampoo is the holy grail of blowout extending. Whether you’re trying to revive previously-perfect strands after a night out at a smoky bar or simply trying to make your $40 blowout last an extra few days, this dry shampoo is a saviour. The lemon verbena scent will make your hair smell freshly-washed, even if you were getting sweaty on the dancefloor or hanging out with smokers and the magical powder sops up oil and volumizes in minutes.

How to: aim the pointed tip at your roots and squeeze. Massage the powder into your roots. Continue with other sections of your hair until desired volume is reached.

Stila Prime Pot, ~$20, Sephora
Whether you’re suffering from too little sleep, have redness around the eyes or need your eye shadow and liner to last through a long day or night, this little pot of magic can help. Stila prime pot is a quick-drying creamy formula that instantly creates the perfect canvas. For those with fair to medium skin, it can be worn alone to fake a full night’s sleep without looking like you’re wearing any makeup.

How to: Swirl the pad of one finger in the pot and quickly smooth across eyes. Blend as needed. Wear alone or top with your favourite eyeliner or eyeshadow looks and rest assured that your makeup will have super staying power.

Benefit High Beam, ~$26, Sephora
Liquid luminizers can be scary, but Benefit High Beam is virtually foolproof and will make you look wide awake and glowy. Thanks to particles that are more shimmer than sparkle, High Beam can be worn day or night to amp up your skin and brighten your face. The pink glow is universally flattering and easily blendable. The nail polish-style applicator ensures that the luminizer is perfectly placed.

How to: using the applicator, dot or smooth High Beam wherever the light would naturally catch your face (or where you’d like a little extra glow). Blend carefully. Spots to try: top of the cheekbones and into the temples, down the bridge of your nose, at the bow of your lips, in the corners of your eyes and along the brow bone.

What are the best beauty products that you didn’t even know you needed?

  • Sigh.  I don’t have any of these products and one of my NY resolutions was to quit buying so much makeup, but the Stila Prime Pot does look pretty enticing.  The one product I didn’t know I needed is definitely the Beauty Blender makeup sponge.  It makes such a difference in applying foundation.  I recently started using a BB cream by Marcelle too and absolutely love it! Don’t know how I ever lived without.

Your love for Beauty Blender has made me *really* want one. Might be using my Glymm points to pick one (or two) up!
I’ve been on a self-imposed spending freeze but my resolve is definitely weakening. One little prime pot won’t’ hurt 😉

  • I bought the dry shampoo, and it is amazing!

Life-changing, right? So glad you ended up buying it!

I honestly love mineral powder foundations.  When I don’t have anytime in the morning (but I CAN’T go without makeup as I have terrible skin) I just put this stuff on and feel presentable.  Love that depending on the way you apply the coverage changes too!

As for Abigail’s comments below I’m such a loser I’ve had my Beauty Blender for a while now but haven’t used it yet!!!  One of my downfalls as a blogger – I don’t like to use things without snapping photos first (I like photos of clean un-used products :P) and I just haven’t had the time lately to snap photos then try it out!  I should definitely get on it!

The dry shampoo is ok for brown hair?

    • Anonymous

      Hi Lauren!
Yes, the Oscar Blandi dry shampoo works perfectly on brown hair. Mine is really dark and I’ve never had a problem – it massages in perfectly. Don’t be afraid by the fact that it’s white.
