A secret that’s not really a secret: I’m really really really into country music. It’s pretty much the only thing I listen to (aside from my beloved ’90s boybands/top 40) if we’re being completely honest. 9 times out of 10, it’s country music (94.7/95.9) that’s blaring on my car radio. Ever since last year’s inaugural Boots & Hearts country music festival, I’ve been dying to go. This year, I was lucky enough to be invited by Chevrolet Canada – they were there to support the launch of the new 2014 Silverado. On Friday morning, I hopped in the car with fellow country gal Shannon Kelly + headed out to Bowmanville for the festival.
Shannon’s family is from the Ajax area, so she was in the know about all things Starbucks & nail polish en route. Yes, we stopped at a nail polish depot on the way. #sorrynotsorry.
See that? It was a cool photo opp in honour of The Band Perry, one of the weekend’s performers. Fun, right?
Once we got out to the festival, we were greeted at the Chevrolet Canada booth by a trio of the new 2014 Silverado pick-up trucks along with our amazing host, Jason Easton from Chevrolet. I’m going to be a bit obsessive about Jason in this post – you’ve been forewarned. He was awesome. Someone give that guy a raise!
Jason walked us through some of the 2014 Silverado’s features – like a gently-lowering hatch and a little step for shrimps like Shan and I to haul ourselves into the back – but we got a taste of how comfortable the truck could be during one of the many downpours. Along with Trina from Life’s a Blog, Shannon and I turned the 2014 Silverado into our very own VIP lounge. This was made only the better when Jason delivered drinks + copious amounts of drink tokens to us in the car. See, told you he was awesome.
Our VIP lounge got a lot of curious stares. It may or may not have been due to the Titanic-style fogging up of the windows. Girl talk, guys. It can get heated.
When we weren’t in our self-created VIP booth, we were hanging out in the Chevrolet tent. The coolest part? There was a live band performing in the tent at various times during the day. The James Cameron Band (only fitting after the Titanic window reference, right?) was, in a word, amazing. A brother/sister duo + band, they played covers along with some original songs.
James was adorable + wore the best red pants ever. Another awesome thing that went down in the Chevrolet tent? We got to meet CMT host Casey Clark and have dinner (pizza!) with him while we waited out the torrential downpour.
Speaking of the downpour, it caused a lot of strife when it came time to choose an outfit. I wanted to wear something that would be country girl chic – just in case I had a Dean Brody run-in, of course – but also hold up in the weather. I ended up pairing a LOFT lace peplum tank (similar style) with Gap legging jeans and cowboy boots for comfort + style and adding my favourite J Brand denim jacket to keep warm. An Anthropologie statement necklace + Longchamp bag stuffed with our festival essentials completed the look.
As for what was stuffed in my Longchamp bag, Chevrolet Canada sent us a great festival survival kit the week before Boots & Hearts containing a few key things for the concert (like a cozy blanket with a moisture barrier, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray + beef jerky). Here’s what Shannon + I brought to stay dry and happy during Boots & Hearts:
- Ponchos (it always rains!)
- Portable smartphone charger (I use this affordable option from J.Crew)
- Point + shoot camera
- Bug spray
- Hair ties
- Lip balm with SPF
- Canadian flag + Sharpies for autographs!
Beauty-wise, we both kept it pretty simple and weather-proof. To prep my skin, I layered on my SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense and blended Benefit Posietint onto my cheeks. Eyes + lips were smudge-free thanks to MAKE UP FOR EVER Smoky Extravagant Mascara and Aqua Rouge Waterproof Liquid Lip Color in #18, an awesome coral shade. When it comes to hair, I’m all about natural texture in the face of humidity & rain. I kept my curls in line with Dove’s new Daily Moisture shampoo & conditioner plus Dove Style + Care Nourishing Amplifier Mousse for all-day hold + shaping. I also gave my hair a healthier-than-usual spritz of my go-to hairspray: L’Oreal Elnett (a cult classic!). All of these products are designed to last pretty much forever – exactly what you want during a downpour.
Dean Brody in the rain – nothing wrong with that! While the day wasn’t really what we expected (the VIP component wasn’t really there), Shannon and I still had a ton of fun with our blogger buddies, Jason from Chevrolet and, of course…Dean Brody. It’s just been announced that Blake Shelton is headlining next July’s Boots & Hearts festival (!!!!) so Shan & I are now accepting requests for concert buddies. We’ll be back!
