Confessions of a Beauty Junkie pt. 1

Not long ago, I tweeted a photo of my bathroom counter.  My Twitter followers responded with messages of shock, awe, support and confession.  Let’s just say “they tried to make me go to rehab”…

While my wallet isn’t thankful for my constant trips to Shopper’s Drug Mart and Sephora, you might be once you learn about my all-time favourite makeup buys.  Consider this 3-part miniseries a tour through my makeup bag.

Having great skin provides a canvas for the rest of your look.  On a day when you don’t want to wear much makeup, flawless skin makes you look polished.  In my opinion, you shouldn’t  fret about spending extra money on products going directly on your skin.  While most eyeshadows and glosses are created equal, foundations and primers are the result of lots of research and development money and are certainly worth the cash.  There’s nothing worse than a poorly-made product reversing the effects of your meticulous skincare routine.

Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (Sephora, approx. $36)

I blogged about my favourite primers last year, but here’s a quick recap.  Smashbox’s primer remains a favourite no matter the season.  It provides the perfect base to make your makeup stick.  Think you don’t need primer?  On a daily basis, you probably don’t.  However, for those special nights out on the town when you really need your makeup to stick, there’s nothing better.

Foundation: Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX Foundation SPF 15 (Sephora, approx. $38)

Build-able beauty in a bottle, this foundation packs the added punch of SPF.  This was the end result of a frantic search for the perfect foundation.  While my skin is generally pretty even, I find a layer of foundation helps to smooth everything out – especially in photos! This foundation goes on sheer and can be built up to a full-coverage look.  With just one layer, my freckles show through.  It’s oil free, which makes it a great choice for any skin type.

Bronzer: NARS Bronzing Powder (Sephora, approx. $32)

I’ve used this bronzer (in Laguna) since high school and haven’t looked back.  You can layer on the colour for the perfect look that’s bronze and never orange – a huge selling point.  The flecks of golden shimmer diffuse light and give you a great glow.  While most beauty experts say to apply bronzer in a “3” shape on either side of your face, I apply this all over and use it almost every day (even in winter!).  It’s that subtle.

Concealer: Benefit Erase Paste (Sephora, approx. $26)

This product is a true obsession of mine.  I’m rarely without it and if I start to run low, I get a little shaky.  Since high school I’ve applied this each morning.  Three little dabs underneath your eyes conceal and brighten after even the most tiring night.  This is one of those products you need to try to believe.

Blush: NARS Blush (Sephora, approx. $26) / Tarte Cheek Stain (Sephora, approx. $30)

These blushes give two different looks, as one is a sheer powder and the other is a push-up gel.

The NARS blushes have long had a cult following, especially in the Orgasm shade (although I preferDesire), for their staying power sheer, build-able application.  Tarte’s cheek stain is easy to apply and gives a dewy finish. Unlike most stains, you don’t have to work frantically to prevent spots of colour or stained fingers.
