A post from the future: Women & Leadership in 2077

August 2, 2077

It’s hard to imagine I’ve been writing on this old blog for 70 years now, but here we are. I suppose it’s become more of an online diary than anything else these days. I celebrated my 89th birthday a week ago with my children and great-grandchildren, a glorious occasion. It seems like just yesterday I was holding an ironic 24th birthday party for myself based on some sort of internet meme. Thanks to the newest cosmetics and skincare, I don’t look a day over 50.

My youngest granddaughter is working on a school project and asked me what things were like for women when I was in my 20s. I expect, to her, the days where a female CEO’s abilities were questioned because of a pregnancy announcement sound much like the days where women weren’t allowed to vote sounded to me. The state of affairs for women and leadership sure is a lot different these days.

Nowadays, having a female CEO is not a big deal. Heck, we’ve even had tons of female prime ministers and they’ve all lasted a few terms in office. The days of questioning reproductive rights are over thanks to strong female leaders and a changing perception of women. The question of whether having children will stall a woman’s career is but a memory, thanks to telecommuting, completely global business and in-office support for moms. The best part? This is a worldwide thing. The divide between men and women is gone and today’s governments and societies treat us all as equals.

As technology becomes more and more prevalent in our society, leaders who are seen as very ‘human’ are in high demand. When I was 24, leaders who could back up their feelings with fact and logic were lauded; now it’s the leaders who can back up the logic and fact with feelings and intuition that stand out.  In a society where precision and data is king, we increasingly admire leaders who can go past the blunt data and tie their platforms into what people feel in their guts but are unwilling to say for fear of being wrong.  Leaders who are willing to trust their intuition and go beyond data and technology are what we want, even if we don’t always know it. Luckily, women tend to thrive under these conditions.

We’ve come a long way since 2012 and I couldn’t be more proud. 2077 is a great year for women and I know today’s leaders will be the most phenomenal role models for all of my grandchildren.
