How to: Fix a Valentine’s Day Fail

Did your Valentine’s Day not go as planned? We’ve all been there. Whether something went awry, didn’t happen at all or you stayed home to wallow, we’ve all got a story of a Valentine’s Day Fail.

My favourite cute-fail? My former roomie had been dating her now-longterm boyfriend for only a few weeks when her Valentine’s Day flowers arrived (hooray!) along with a teddy bear (awww) who was hugging an I Love You cushion (OMG). This strongly-worded bear has now become quite the inside joke, but you can imagine the freak-out that happened!

I can’t say I’ve ever had a truly horrible Valentine’s Day, although there have been more than a few guys in my life who have dropped the ball on the ‘big day’. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have a do-over?

Valentine's Day contest

I’ve partnered with Durex to give you just that: a do-over. Tell me about your best or worst Valentine’s Day for a chance to let the Durex #SavesTheDate fairy godmothers turn your dud date into a wow. How are we going to do that? Simple. We’re going to give you $150 to go on the date of your dreams plus a prize pack of Durex goodies worth $100 should your improved evening go really really well.

What could you do with $150? I would visit Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada for a romantic stroll in the fishy tunnel of love then head to a cozy nearby dinner spot – think e11even or Mirto for a bite over a bottle of wine. Here are a few other options from my Twitter followers:

I had just met someone so it was stupid to go out for V Day but it fell on the weekend. He brought a friend along. They talked work all night.

We didn’t make Valentine’s reservations in time to the restaurant I really wanted to go to. So, we went for sushi and came home to watch Olympic replays. No Woodlot and no Macarons 🙁

  • gr33ndr4gon

Best – being surprised with a home cooked meal.

  • AngelaMarriott

My best Valentine’s day date was when my husband took me to a fancy dinner ,hotel and there was red roses and my favorite chocolates waiting for me.

  • vilmark

My favorite Valentines day just happened this past Valentines it was spent with the most amazing girl, just getting to know each other better and watching her smile made the day unforgettable for me.

  • dalleykt

My best valentines day memory is I got breakfast in bed, a dozen roses and then out for a nice romantic dinner!!

  • Brenda Penton

My worst Valentine’s Day was when I was a teenager.  My boyfriend gave me a ring and then dumped me a few hours later.

  • BelindaMcNabb

My best valentines date ever was the first one with my boyfriend. He was living in Montreal and I was living in Winnipeg at the time. He surprised me a few weeks before with a plane ticket to go and see him. I arrived on Valentines day and from the time that plane touched the ground until the moment I left it was the most romantic weekend I have ever spent. He spoiled me rotten and tweeted me like a queen.

Well, that time when my boyfriend broke up with me was pretty significant…

  • Bons

I broke up with one of my boyfriends a week before Valentine’s so didn’t celebrate Valentine’s that year.

  • hmrcarlson

One year, my hubby gifted me with a knife set and Dust Buster. Ehhh….

  • AndreaAmy

No good Valentine’s memory actually. I’ve never received a Valentine’s gift (beyond hand made cards/love notes from my children which of course I cherish) from my husband or any boyfriend in the past. I actually don’t like Valentine’s day and do my best to avoid everything about it 🙂

  • LoriButler

this year I hadn’t seen my hubby for a few weeks, he works away, so he comes home on Friday with a cold, flu bug, and shares it with me, I’ve been sick all weekend and he has strep 🙁  I need a do over for Valentines day

  • SeptembreA

The only person to buy me anything for Valentine’s Day for the first 23 years of my life was my mother despite dating someone, albeit on and off, for five years. We always seemed to be “off” for Valentine’s Day -_____-

  • BreeJanke

Best Valentines  day was my hubby making cards with the kids and cooking me dinner! I also got flowers and chocolates!

  • Lori Jackson

Th best was when my Hubby proposed to me in Florida on the beach 🙂

  • travelluna

  • nicolthepickle1

I don’t really have a worst, but best was my first married V Day. 🙂

  • DonnaLee1

Oh snap, I guess it would be the first one with my current squeeze, we had just had our first date on the 11th of February and he came by on the 14th with a single white rose. Very sweet.

  • TylerAnthony989

This year my girlfriend and I both worked all day, so we didn’t even get to see each other.

  • I didn’t even get a card…

  • glogirl3

My best valentine’s memory is this year.  I didn’t have a significant other so my mom made the day extra special. She gave me small gifts and put on a special supper!

  • AimeeRobison

My ex totally forgot about Valentine’s day and left me waiting for him to pick me up for our date 🙁

  • sassygirlcanada

My best date was receiving a number of gifts that were a part of a theme, leading up to theatre tickets to Beauty & The Beast! Very thoughtful and romantic. 🙂

  • Ei Leen

My boyfriend at the time forgot all about it. Until I reminded him when he got home. Then he sneaked out to buy a rose (probably the last one in the store, because it was blue & sparkly)…and acted like he remembered.
