Spooky Beauty Picks

It’s only fitting that as a notorious Halloween Last-Minuter (I’m still working on my costume as I write this…) I’m sharing some last-minute Halloween beauty picks. If you’re like me and are scrambling to get your costume together before Friday, take solace in the fact that makeup can be your greatest ally. Pale your skin, darken your eyes, bloody your tips and you’ve got a costume on your hands!

DSC_0408Whether you’re adding a sprinkle of Halloween spirit or going all-out, the recommendations below will have you well on your way to ghoulish greatness. Pick one or two or try the whole lot –  most of these items have drugstore prices and the ones that don’t will quickly become your favourite splurges.

They say the eyes are the windows to your soul, but just a few tweaks can make them nearly soul-less for Halloween. See what I did there? For your Halloween eyes, you’ll want a variety of eyeshadow shades on hand – they’ll double as contouring and highlights for your face -, some bold falsies and liquid liner.

Hard Candy Top 10 Palette Eye Shadow

At $6 each, these Top 10 Palettes from Hard Candy (get them at Walmart) are the perfect way to buy a variety of shades without breaking the bank. The colour payoff is actually quite good and the formulation silky for a lower-priced brand – I use my Nude palette all the time. Use the Purple palette to create bruised eyes and sunken, “dead” cheeks for a zombie costume, the blues for an 80’s-inspired or aquatic look and the golden and pink hues for an ethereal princess look.

Whether you use these liners to define your eyes or draw on matte accents – think kitten whiskers, doll eye and freckles and more – they have the staying power you need to keep going all spooky night long. Revlon ColorStay Skinny Liquid Liner, $10.49 each

Planning to bat your lashes at a handsome stranger on the spookiest night of the year? Look no further than this lengthening, thickening, fringe-darkening holy grail of a mascara. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, $30.
Yes, I’m recommending these for Halloween…but you’ll probably want to stockpile these for the holiday season and beyond. They’re beautifully lush but their tapered design makes them featherlight. You can pick them up in three varieties, escalating in drama (Sultry, Shy, Flirty) but I’m partial to Shy for regular occasions and, of course, Flirty for Halloween. KISS Looks So Natural Lashes, $4.97 each at Walmart

When it comes to Haloween lips, focus on products that get you out the door quickly and require minimal touch-ups. I love this ombre lipstick from Hard Candy ($6) because of the cool effect it gives – you can wear this to work with some false lashes and call it a day!

Want a subtle way to celebrate? Look no further than your nails! A manicure is a quick & easy way to switch up your look just for the day. Thanks to press-on nails, nail stickers and at-home 7 day polish, it’s never been easy to get your spook on.

Broadway Nails’ Halloween imPRESS press-on nails (above) are the best way to kill two birds with one stone. These stick-on nails mean you don’t need to waste time shaping your nails or worrying that they’re all different sizes. Press & go! Broadway Nails imPRESS Halloween, $11 each.

DSC_0423CND Vinylux remains my favourite at-home longwearing polish. Just two coats plus a special topcoat keeps your manicure looking fresh for up to 7 days. The best part? It hardens with exposure to natural UV light outdoors and you can remove it with regular polish remover. Tinted Love is not only the perfect bloody shade for Halloween – it’s also my favourite fall manicure colour! CND Vinylux Weekly Polish, $11.95

Prefer nail stickers to press-on? Sally Hansen Limited Edition Salon Effects Halloween Collection nail stickers (above) are a quick & easy way to amp up your mani. Some of the stickers even glow in the dark! Pick them up for $9.95 nationwide ($8.97 each at Walmart)

Whether you’re hoping to be ghoulish or glam, make sure your skin is the perfect canvas. These two products are not only my go-tos for everyday – they’ll also build up to help you match your face to your costume.

Get an ethereal, other-worldly glow with a liberal application of my favourite highlighter, Benefit Girl Meets Pearl. I’d stick to the cheekbones and your cupid’s bow, but you can definitely layer it on for more of an impact. Beware: it’s addictive. You’ll find yourself using it every day, albeit with a less liberal application. Benefit Girl Meets Pearl, $36.
Foolproof blush and contouring can be yours, whether you’re looking for an orange + brown 70’s inspired look or need baby pink cheeks to complement your Barbie costume. I love the formula and also the price.

What are you dressing up as this year?
