Have you ever wondered what would happen if your favourite lipstick and lip balm had a baby? Someone at Maybelline must have been a bit of a voyeur, because they made the magic happen and it’s amazing. Maybelline’s Color Whisper by Color Sensational lip colours are sheer, gel-based lip colours without heavy waxes or oils. Basically, they’re weightless, shiny, pigmented lip colours.
I was sent four shades to review: Bare to be Bold (a sheer, beige-y nude), Rose of Attraction (light pink with golden shimmer), Mad for Magenta (a purple-y pink) and Who Wore it Red-er (pink-toned sheer red). First off, the packaging is stunning. I love that the tubes show the colour that’s inside and the metallic accents are gorgeous. They just plain look like fun.

Each of the shades goes on smoothly like a balm and deposits a sheer veil of colour. If you blot and apply another layer, these shades are buildable. As is to be expected, the darker shades are more pigmented and even stain slightly when you wear them – a plus in my books. Out of the four shades I received, the only one I wasn’t a fan of was Bare to be Bold – it was too close to my skintone! For ladies with darker skin than mine (not a tough ask), this shade will probably look great.

The shades I’ve found myself wearing the most are Mad for Magenta and Who Wore It Red-er – they add the perfect pop of colour to any look but since they’re balm hybrids I find myself not worrying if my lipstick has smudged or worn off. It’s liberating, really. When you’re looking at the swatches, it’s important to remember that these shades will look a bit different on everybody since they’re so sheer. My lips are pretty pigmented, which has definitely skewed the colours.

Which shades do you have your eye on? After spotting Jessica from Beautezine’s swatches of Coral Ambition and Cherry on Top, I’m thinking I may have to add a few more to my collection. At $9.99, it’s a goal that’s more than achievable.
