#ManicureMonday: Ombre nails with China Glaze For Audrey & Essie’s Bikini So Teeny

If it’s on Pinterest, you can be sure it’s trendy…and sometimes tough to do. Let’s just say my first attempt at ombre nails did not go so well as I would have hoped. But, I’ve finally conquered the trend and I’m happy to share this how-to with you for this week’s #ManicureMonday post!

Ombre can be as subtle or as wacky as you like – it’s all about the colours you choose! For this manicure, I used two blues that emulate two of my favourite shades of branded blue. Essie’s Bikini So Teeny is as close to Crayola’s Periwinkle crayon (my favourite!) as I’ve ever found while China Glaze’s For Audrey is a dead-wringer for Tiffany blue. Both are, in my opinion, must-haves in any polish collection.

How to: Ombre nails

What you’ll need:

  • makeup sponge (soaked in water and wrung out to 80% dampness)
  • two shades of polish
  • basecoat & topcoat
  • Cotton swab and/or small paintbrush plus remover for cleanup

How to:

  1. Shape & file your nails and apply basecoat evenly.
  2. Paint your nails with the lighter hue and let dry. If required, apply a second coat.
  3. On the makeup sponge, paint a stripe of each polish so they’re touching but not mixing. The darkest shade should be closest to the end of the sponge. You may have to paint over it a few times, as the sponge will likely absorb some polish.
  4. With the darkest colour closest to the tip of your nail, bounce the sponge up and down to transfer the polish. The shades will naturally blend,  giving you the ombre effect!
  5. Finish with a topcoat and clean up any polish around the nail bed using a cotton swab or small paintbrush dipped in remover.
