Something WICKED this way comes

Great news, Broadway babes!  Wicked is back for another limited engagement in Toronto!

I was first introduced to the musical by a residence floormate in first year university.  He had been raving about it for weeks, yet I remained uninterested until he sent me a link to a video not unlike this one:

I fell in love immediately. That summer, during a trip to New York City with my mother, I saw Wicked live.  I finally understood why the musical has such a cult following.

Wicked tells the story before The Wizard of Oz. Using witty dialogue and carefully crafted songs, the musical explains why the Wicked Witch became wicked, how the Lion became a coward and why the Tin Man turned to tin.

[Spoiler]

Want to know how Fiyero became the Scarecrow?  Check out these lines from No Good Deed, sung by Elphaba (the Wicked Witch):

“Let his flesh not be torn
Let his blood leave no stain
When they beat him
Let him feel no pain
Let his bones never break
And however they try
To destroy him
Let him never die
Let him never die”

Is it possible the Wicked Witch wasn’t really that wicked at all?  This is potentially the best aspect of the musical for a PR student such as myself.

[More spoilers…watch out!]
It turns out that the Wicked Witch wasn’t wicked at all and Glinda the Good Witch was actually terribly manipulative.  Thanks to the PR savvy of Madame Morrible, the residents of Oz went on a hunt – complete with pitchfork –  for the wrong witch.

Wicked is in Toronto from October 20 – November 28 at the Canon Theatre (get your tickets here).  Bring your sister, bring your boyfriend, bring your mom.  This musical is truly one that everyone can enjoy (seriously – even your boyfriend. There are flying gargoyle monkeys!).

Remember, no one mourns the WICKED!
